Meditate and Travel: how to meditate while traveling and not lose practice

Jul 24, 2023 | Wellness

Are meditation and traveling incompatible? How can you maintain your meditation practice during your travels or vacations?

At BALIBUTA we want you to live trips in connection and awareness and one of the wonderful practices that you can maintain during your trip is to meditate. Meditating and traveling will help you stay calm, relax, and connect with the present moment, even when you’re on the go.

Today, with the help of our wellness travel Tour Leader Caro Baeza from @omdharmayoga, we want to share with you some tips that will help you meditate and travel:

Find a quiet place:

Try to find a quiet place where you can concentrate. It does not have to be a place away from people, or without noise, but you do feel comfortable. It can be even within the means of transport in which you are; a window seat on a plane, bus or van, and even a corner with less traffic at an airport or in your hotel.

Take a comfortable position:

Siéntate con la espalda recta y los pies en el suelo, si es posible. Relaja los hombros y las manos. Si estás en un avión, un bus o en una van, ajusta tu postura de acuerdo a las limitaciones del espacio. Si estás en un lugar donde te puedas sentar en el suelo, hazlo. Cruza tus piernas y apoya tu espalda en una pared.

Focus on your breath:

Breath is your best anchor for meditation and life. Breathing correctly will help you, not only for meditation and travel, but for life in general. Focus on the flow of your breath as you inhale and exhale. Observe how the air enters and leaves your body, feel the temperature of the air that enters through your nostrils. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Observe your sensations:

Pay attention to the physical sensations of your body while traveling, how it feels, what it feels like. Notice the pressure of the seat, the vibrations or movements of the vehicle, and any other sensations that you may experience. Don’t judge or get attached to these sensations, just watch them and let them pass.

Be aware of your thoughts:

During the trip, thoughts and worries are likely to arise in your mind. Don’t cling to them or judge them, just watch them as if they were clouds floating in the sky, release those clouds and let them pass (clearing the sky from your mind). Bring your attention back to your breath or the sensations present in your body.

We also recommend using some additional resources to help you meditate while traveling with us. For example, you can listen to soft music or sounds of nature in your headphones, apply lavender essential oil or your aromatherapy roll-on to your temples and wrists, use meditation apps on your phone, or follow online meditation guides.

Remember that the practice of meditation is personal and everyone has their own rhythm. Meditation is practiced without greater expectations than to give a rest to mental fatigue, stimuli and overthinking. Experiment with different techniques and find the one that works best for you while traveling. The key is to keep an open, relaxed, and receptive attitude throughout the process.

We hope these tips help you in your daily practice or in your initiation into the world of meditation while traveling.
